Addis Ababa: An earthquake struck a remote part of southern Ethiopia on Monday, killing up to 55 people, local officials said, warning that the death toll could rise.

In the statement made by the Gofa District Communications Department, it was stated that "more than 55 bodies were found on the ground" and the district head, Dagmawi Zerihun, said that "personal deaths will continue to increase".

Dagmawi said the earthquake struck at 10am (0700GMT) following heavy rain in a mountainous area in Ethiopia's southern region.
